Public design is a discipline of design that aims to serve the different needs and preferences of the public. It mostly relates to public systems (e.g., telecommunication systems), environments (e.g., streets), facilities (e.g., rubbish bins), and graphical design images (public poster images).
Established in 2018, Public Public Public is a research and consultancy institution dedicated to promote and develop public design in order to serve new and changing urban needs. Our primary focus is on sustainable, human-centred and participatory design practices that place emphasis on ecological, economic, and social issues.
One of our missions is to serve the needs and preferences of the deprived, persons with disabilities and persons with special needs through promoting and developing sustainable public environments, facilities and street furniture. We adopt user-centred research methods and design processes to ensure that solutions are accessible, usable, understandable, as well as attractive for the end users.
We also advocate for the value of inclusive public design in Hong Kong and beyond. Through actively engaging in interdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer such as exhibitions and public engagement programs, we aim to nurture designers with creativity, and cultural and social awareness in public design. Through design collaborations with government departments, NGOs, academic and research institutions, and professional bodies at policy, implementation and management levels, we aspire to be the pioneer in designing for good and bringing about social change.
